September 1 – September 4 Labor Day extended weekend.
You’ll have to search far and wide to find a less commercially successful Labor Day weekend than the Labor Day weekend we had in 2017. Totalling $46.4 million dollars for the 3-day weekend, the summer limped to a close with the lowest top ten total in nearly two decades.
Coming in at number 1 for the third weekend in a row The Hitman’s Bodyguard scored $10.5 million for the weekend and $13.3 million over four days netting a total of $58 million. The Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson action/comedy managed to tick up 2.6% over last weekend. Annabelle: Creation came in at number 2 earning $9.3 million over the holiday weekend, bringing its total up to just a hair under $91 million. Up against a budget of $15 million and an international Box Office of $255 million, I think we can expect another sequel to be added to the expanding Conjuring universe.
The low-budget Drama Wind River starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen continues to expand its theatrical release. The film is now open in over 2,600 screens and managed to net $7.9 million, bringing its total to $20 million against an $11 million budget. Rounding up the top 5 is a tight battle between Leap! And Logan Lucky, earning $6.5 million and $5.6 million respectively.
The remainder of the top 10 include: Dunkirk, Spider-Man, The Emoji Movie, Despicable Me 3 and The Nut Job 2. All the films are Summer leftovers and saw significant increases over last Monday due to the holiday, especially Despicable Me 3, who shot up a whopping 89%.
Overall the Box Office continues to suffer due to the lack of compelling original releases, this should change with the opening of IT next weekend which has garnered a lot of interest.
